Scroll 14 Han Shu. Vol.2

The ancient funeral rites included crying, 
beating one's chest and stamping
 one's feet to express extreme grief,

while the ancient rejoicing rites included singing 
and dancing to express one's pleasures.
To an upright person, these rites were
 sufficient to conform to his sincerity, 
and to an immoral person,
these rites were sufficient to guard against his mistakes.


哀有哭踴之節 樂有歌舞之容
正人足以副其誠 邪人足以防其失
[白話 ] (古禮中) 悲痛時會邊哭邊頓足的禮節
高興時會有載歌載舞的儀容
這對正直的人來說 足以與他的真誠相符
對偏邪的人來說 足以提防他的過失
